Abstract, contemporary, geometric work, which from a variety of different rectangular structures gives the impression of a robot head to the viewer and may be regarded as a reminiscence of the artist for the science fiction author Isaac Asimov, who is considered the inventor of the term "robotics". Isaac Asimov (* 2 January 1920 in Petrovichi, Soviet Russia, † 6 April 1992 in New York, United States) was a Russian-American biochemist, non-fiction writer and one of the most famous science fiction writers of his time. Together with Arthur C. Clarke and Robert A. Heinlein, he is often listed as one of the "Big Three" of English science fiction. Asimov was a prolific writer who wrote or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 90,000 letters and postcards. Asimov wrote hard science fiction. Asimov's most famous work is the "Foundation" series, the first three books of which won the one-time Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966. His other major series are the "Galactic Empire" series and the Robot series. The Galactic Empire novels are set in earlier history of the same fictional universe as the Foundation series. Later, with Foundation and Earth (1986), he linked this distant future to the Robot stories, creating a unified "future history" for his stories much like those pioneered by Robert A. Heinlein and previously produced by Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson. He also wrote hundreds of short stories, including the social science fiction novelette "Nightfall", which in 1964 was voted the best short science fiction story of all time by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Asimov wrote the Lucky Starr series of juvenile science-fiction novels using the pen name Paul French. Asimov also wrote mysteries and fantasy, as well as much nonfiction. Most of his popular science books explain concepts in a historical way, going as far back as possible to a time when the science in question was at its simplest stage. Examples include Guide to Science, the three-volume set Understanding Physics, and Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery. He wrote on numerous other scientific and non-scientific topics, such as chemistry, astronomy, mathematics, history, biblical exegesis, and literary criticism. He was president of the American Humanist Association. The asteroid (5020) Asimov, a crater on the planet Mars, a Brooklyn elementary school, Honda's humanoid robot, ASIMO, and four literary awards are named in his honor. In the narrative part of his oeuvre, three main focuses can be identified: 1. his robot stories on the earth of the near future 2. his robot crime novels of the future 3. his stories about the galactic empire of the distant future In his later life he connected the main focuses by further novels which fill the gaps in the plots of his early works. The plot spans over 20 millennia. He also wrote numerous short stories and several novels with an independent plot framework. His robot stories and above all the short story Nightfall are regarded as particularly outstanding works of the science fiction genre. In fact, in 1968 Nightfall was voted the best science fiction story before 1965 by the Science Fiction Writers of America. Besides the robot stories, its fame is based on a series of short stories, which were later published as the Foundation cycle. Inspired by Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he describes the decline of a galactic empire.The short stories The Chronoscope and The Story of a Hero also show a clear reception of antiquity, which is connected with the fact that Asimov was a great admirer of Hannibal and at times considered to pursue the career of a historian. Asimov invented terms that are now generally used in science fiction and in language use. For example, "positronic" as opposed to electronic (first mentioned in Reason 1941), "robotics" (first mentioned in the short story Runaround, March 1942 - the name of the company U.S. Robotics goes back to this) and "psycho-historical" (Foundation cycle). His works have inspired many other writers and his science fiction collections have inspired countless readers. In particular, the three laws of robotics became common knowledge in science fiction. Asimov's work was not limited to science fiction. He became a modern polymath after giving up teaching: he was co-author of a textbook on biochemistry, wrote books on the Bible and William Shakespeare, works on Greek and Roman history and non-fiction books on scientific subjects from almost every field - including a guide to the use of slide rules. He has published over 500 books and more than 1600 essays. He was also the editor of numerous science fiction anthologies and his own science fiction journal. In the short story Robbie (1940), Asimov first dealt thoroughly with machines with artificial brains, the robots. Before Asimov, the majority of robot stories in literature had followed the Frankenstein pattern, which Asimov described as incredibly boring: "Robots were created and destroyed their creators". In the story Runaround, first published in 1942, Asimov postulated the laws of robots. A robot may not injure a human being or cause harm through inactivity. A robot must obey the orders of a human, unless such orders are contrary to the first law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. Asimov assumes that tools in general are designed to implicitly obey these laws. Similarly, in his stories robot brains are designed in such a way that the robots cannot and must not do anything else but obey the three laws of robotics. They are positronic brains, which do not have the choice to decide explicitly or even arbitrarily. They react compulsorily, similar to how today's computer systems react according to the binary system: 0= do not execute; 1= execute. According to Asimov, these laws are necessary to prevent a robot from reaching its own consciousness, which could cause unmanageable chaos and incalculable consequences for man and machine. "The only thing about myself that I consider to be severe enough to warrant psychoanalytic treatment is my compulsion to write ... That means that my idea of a pleasant time is to go up to my attic, sit at my electric typewriter (as I am doing right now), and bang away, watching the words take shape like magic before my eyes." —?Asimov, 1969
